I am writing to urge you to vote YES on final approval of the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument.
The Traqueros, Mexican and Mexican American railroad workers, performed dangerous and often invisible labor that helped build and maintain the rail system that connected California and the nation. Their contributions have too often been overlooked, despite the lasting impact they had on our communities and economy.
Public monuments shape the stories we tell about who built our city and whose contributions matter. The Venice Traquero Monument is an opportunity to recognize a community whose history deserves a permanent place in our public spaces and to ensure future generations understand the role Traqueros played in building the infrastructure we all rely on today.
At a time when many immigrant and Latino families are experiencing fear and uncertainty, this monument is also a meaningful affirmation that their history, culture, and contributions belong in Los Angeles and deserve to be honored.
Please vote YES to approve the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument.
Thank you for your consideration.
