A coalition of workers, community organizations, and faith groups has launched a ballot initiative that would require the largest corporations in Los Angeles to pay a modest additional business tax when executive pay is wildly out of line with worker pay. The goal is simple: reinvest some of that wealth back into the city—into housing, street and sidewalk repairs, after-school programs, and access to healthy food.
Mar Vista Voice is working with partners across Los Angeles to help collect the signatures needed to qualify this measure for the ballot, and we’re inviting neighbors on the Westside to be part of it.
The measure applies to very large employers—companies with 1,000 or more employees—where the highest-paid executive earns more than 50 times the median pay of the company’s Los Angeles-based workers.
Revenue from the tax would be dedicated to public needs, including:
Housing for working families
Street and sidewalk repairs
After-school and youth programs
Expanding access to healthy food in underserved neighborhoods
This approach reflects a growing national conversation about pay inequality and the role cities can play in addressing it.
Before voters can decide on the measure, supporters must gather tens of thousands of valid signatures from registered voters in the City of Los Angeles. That means volunteers are essential.
The good news is that gathering signatures is straightforward. Most volunteers collect signatures from friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and people in their community. A single packet holds up to 40 signatures, and even one completed sheet makes a real difference.
When you sign up, you’ll:
Pick up a packet locally
Collect signatures from registered voters in Los Angeles
Return the packet when it’s complete
We’ll provide clear instructions and be available to answer questions along the way.
