SUBJECT: Let Kenneth Mejia Do His Job and Stop Wasting Taxpayer Dollars

Councilmembers and Mayor Bass,
I was very disturbed to learn that Kenneth Mejia has been kept from doing his job as City Controller to audit our homeless services. Contracting an outside firm for $3 million when Mejia’s office could have done the audit for free is a huge waste of our city resources, particularly when the city is already in a budget crisis.
Furthermore, not utilizing Mejia’s office to act as a real-time monitor for homelessness spending and instead contracting Ron Galperin is an insult to all of the voters who elected Mejia. Angelenos support Kenneth because we want to see greater transparency in how our tax dollars are being spent, especially when it comes to making sure that our most vulnerable neighbors on the streets are getting the resources they need and that this spending isn’t being wasted.
I will remind you that Kenneth received the most votes of any elected official in LA history in 2022. I would hope your office can recognize that it’s advantageous to your own future elections to work with Mejia and ensure he’s able to use his office to its full potential.
Thank you

SUBJECT: Charter Reform Must Include a Truly Independent City Controller
TO:
Members of the Charter Reform Commission,
I am writing to express my desire to see the City Controller’s role being clarified and strengthened in the updated city charter. Given the numerous issues we have seen Kenneth Mejia’s office run into during his time as Controller, I feel that it is urgent to give the Controller more independent power to audit the city and ensure that the city’s finances are presented transparently to the public. Particularly frustrating to me is that the Controller’s office has been shut out of auditing and monitoring the city’s homeless services, a role the Controller should be mandated to perform. I support all six of Controller Mejia’s recommendations for reforming the office and helping the city’s financial stability.
These are:
programs that are sourced from or use City tax dollars (including those under elected offices)
